Integrated Circular Waste Management Systems: A Comparative Quantitative Analysis of Environmental and Economic Performance Across Urban and Industrial Regions

Abstract

This paper presents a comparative quantitative evaluation of integrated circular waste management systems across five distinct urban and industrial regions to assess their environmental and economic performance relative to conventional linear approaches. We employed a mixed-methods research design combining waste characterization, Material Flow Analysis, Life Cycle Assessment, and circular economy metrics, involving 40 municipal waste facilities, 20 recycling industries, and 400 households. Ten sustainable practices were implemented and monitored, including source segregation, composting, anaerobic digestion, waste-to-energy, industrial symbiosis, and specialized recycling streams. The results demonstrate that circular economy approaches substantially outperform conventional systems across all measured indicators. Industrial symbiosis achieved the highest performance, with an 84% recycling rate, 89% resource recovery, and a Circular Economy Index of 94. Across all regions, the intervention yielded a 60.9% increase in recycling rates (from 46% to 74%), a 65.3% improvement in resource recovery, and an 81.6% increase in landfill diversion. Environmental benefits included a 27.7% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 30.9% improvement in the Environmental Protection Index. Economically, operational costs decreased by 22.2%, while revenue from recyclables increased by 138.7% and employment grew by 50.6%. Pearson correlation analysis revealed strong positive associations (r=0.87 to 0.94) among recycling rate, resource recovery, and environmental performance metrics. The primary challenges identified were poor source segregation and insufficient recycling infrastructure.
